Who can participate in Rookie League?
The league is for girls and boys between Kindergarten and 2nd grade.
What is the goal of Rookie League?
The first goal is for players to have fun and enjoy playing basketball. The second goal is to introduce the foundational skills of basketball - dribbling, passing and shooting. Rookie League is designed to prepare players to eventually move up and play at the AYB Divisional level.
Can I volunteer to coach a team or help out?
Yes!! Rookie League runs because of volunteers. Every season we need parents to fill the role of Coach, Assistant Coach, Team Photographer, Team Manager (snack schedule). It’s ok if you’ve never coached before. We provide an opportunity, in person, to show you how to run a practice and fun drills you can run. If you are willing to coach or help out please let us know!!
When does registration open/close and what is the timeframe for the season?
Registration generally opens in September and closes in October. Generally, the Rookie League season begins in early November and ends in late January.
What days and times will practices and games be?
All events for Rookie League take place on Saturdays between 9am and 1pm. The location of practices and games will be at Castillero Middle School or Bret Harte Middle School. Two game days are included during the season. One game day is in mid-December and the other in late January. The date/time/location of practice and games will be provided soon after registration closes and we know how many teams we can field for the season.
How long is each practice and game day?
Each practice is 1 hour long. Game days are longer because teams play a round-robin style of play.
What is provided to each Rookie League player?
Each Rookie League player receives a Rookie League t-shirt (to be used during game days) and a basketball of the appropriate size and weight for their age group.
Does Rookie League accept buddy requests?
Yes. We will do our best to ensure your player is on the same team as the buddies requested.
